Hither are some Maher-isms you'll find in this book:

"Plenty with the "For Dummies" serial. The last harbinger was this week when I saw NASCAR for Dummies. Let me salve you the $12.99. Information technology's rednecks drinking beer and watching other rednecks turn left."
"No puppet fucking. The movie Team America: Globe Police features graphic sex activity scenes between marionettes. If I had any interest in wooden sex activity with strings attached, I'd become married."
"No paying kids to tattle. A high school in Georgia says it will pay kids upward to $100 to rat out friends who steal, cheat, or drink. Just like the Bible says. Because it'southward never too early to look into your own center and ask yourself: What would Judas exercise?"
"There is no such thing as "flavored h2o". There's a whole aisle of this crap at the supermarket--water, only without the watery taste. Sorry, but flavored water is chosen a soft drink. Y'all desire flavored water? Cascade some scotch over ice and allow it melt. That's your flavored water."
"Stop whining well-nigh gas prices. Gas costs a lot because we have to find it, bribe or kill the people who live on top of information technology, extract it, refine it, send it, and pump it. You'll pay $2 a gallon and you'll like it because y'all know what the alternative is: riding on the passenger vehicle with poor people."
"Transvestites are gay. I know what y'all're going to say: "Beak, non all transvestites are gay." Yes, they are. Studies show...aw, screw studies. Yes, they are."
"Stop waxing your pussy. At present, I am non talking well-nigh "regularly scheduled maintenance." I am talking about the women who brand the thing as baldheaded as Bruce Willis's head. It is supposed to take some hair on it. It'south a pussy, not Dr. Evil's cat."
Run into? Nib Maher is not a known giver of fucks. He tells it like it is and he makes fun of everybody (mostly people in politics) but as you can encounter from the higher up quotes, he does become over the boundaries from time to time. He is who he is and that's the mode he like information technology. I believe he does support things like gay marriage and legalizing of weed (he smokes a ton of it based on ane quote from this book). He does occasionally make fun of it simply it is supposed to be in good nature mode, although some people might see it otherwise.
BOOK LAYOUT: Basically, this book has two quotes such as the ones to a higher place on each page with a pocket-sized motion picture put right betwixt each quote to have up space and to chronicle to either the top quote or the lesser 1. That is how most of this book is. It is called New Rules because he tells us to stop doing such and such and he tells u.s. why like he does in quotes above. In that location are "Capacity" and each chapter is a letter in the alphabet. His rules deal with things first with that letter.
Some things are outdated but I overall enjoyed the book. Read information technology in two days but an avid reader could read it in one twenty-four hours easily since this book has TONS of pictures. Gave me quite a few laughs also.
...more thanAnd then, this is a fun and worthy effort, though its lack of unifying theme detracts from its touch on. Given his gift for observation and humorous exposition, I wanted (simply did not get) more, which, unfortunately, diminished its significance for me. I would really welcome a more than adult and extended take from the author, though I am also quite sensitive to the reality that the line between social observer/critic and blowhard is a sparse i easily transgressed. Still, I hope Maher takes the shot - he's got very a interesting perspective and withering wit, mostly a skilful combination.
...moreInformation technology is also obvious that the volume as written during the Bush-league administration. Therefore one must be aware of all the events that took place during that detail period.
It is a must read for those interested in political satirist humor.
Only at least the Right isn't hypocritical on this upshot; they really believe that homosexuality is an "anathema" and a dysfunction that's "curable." They besides believe that if a gay man just devotes his life to Jesus,Really funny, but not for the hands offended. Pecker Maher does not discriminate. He makes fun of anybody. The material is a little out of date, but still entertaining. He has a good argument on the issue of gay wedlock. Progress is beingness made, but really, why is this an result?
Merely at least the Right isn't hypocritical on this issue; they really believe that homosexuality is an "abomination" and a dysfunction that's "curable." They also believe that if a gay homo just devotes his life to Jesus, he'll stop beingness gay -- considering that theory worked out and so well with the Catholic priests....more thanBut the greater shame in this story goes to the Democrats. They don't believe homosexuality is an abomination, and therefore their refusal to endorse gay marriage is hypocrisy. Their position doesn't come up from the Bible; it'southward ripped right from the latest poll, which says well-nigh Americans are against gay marriage.
Well, you know what? Sometimes "most Americans" are wrong. Where'due south the Democrat who will stand up up and become beyond the half measure of "civil spousal relationship" and "hate the sin, love the sinner" and say loud and clear, "At that place is no sin--it's non an abomination"?
No on can control how Cupid aims his arrows, and the ones who pretend they tin unremarkably turn out to exist the biggest freaks of all.
It does get repetitive with the "new rules" being stated each time he changes topics; however, information technology does help keep the subjects separate. Some items are dated (and information technology is funny hearing him and perhaps how close he became to reality when he "predicts" what might happen).
Some laugh out loud moments, others to snicker at, and some to ponder...

Pretty good and entertaining book.
...moreMaher is biting and bitter and aroused and rough, just I accepted all of that. I did not concord with it when his show was cancelled on ABC after 9/xi because he was right. The actions of the terrorists were distressing and horrific, but they were not cowardly. Willingness to die for what you believe in is not cowardice, and the fact that he admitted that about America's enemies pissed off boilerplate Americans, even the liberals. However, what should piss of the liberals where we (I consider myself a liberal) emphasize the nobility of human being beings is Maher's classism, his anti-religious prejudice (y'all don't have to concur with someone's faith to respect them, any more than than I have to concur with the fact that he is a raging pothead to respect his correct to fume marijuana), his fat-shaming, and most of all his reduction of woment to sexual objects first and foremost. For all that he rages against religious conservatives, whether Christian or Muslim, oppressing/repressing women by not letting usa express ourselves sexually or choose our own clothing, any time he mentions a woman in this collection of musings that doesn't address repression, it is to practise with sexual operation or fantasies, or dismissing them entirely because he does not wish to have sex with them or -- WORSE -- they would not wish to accept sex with him. For all that he claims to respect women, he just believes in a woman'southward right to be sexually available to him and her obligation to be sexually attractive to him. Sadly, he is not alone.
The simply semi-redeeming moment for me in the whole audio collection was when the snippet on Donald Trump's hair/combover was immediately followed by him wishing that the US could take a colorful sexual-scandal laden buffoon of a president. At least at present I know who actually is to arraign for the last iv years.
...more thanMaher's HBO bear witness "Real Time With Neb Maher" premiered in 2003. This book contains textile until 2005. A lot has happened in the last decade. I was in high school when these events happened. Most of the references and events I had completely forgotten about. Why should I notwithstanding remember Scott Peterson? Other references were and then dated that I had to exercise supplemental research. A funny book at time, but some of the material tin be dried.
Here are some highlights:
-"George Buch must end saying he owes all his success to Laura. George Bush-league owes all his success to his daddy, his daddy's friends, trust funds, legacy admissions, the National Guard, the Supreme Court, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, and AA."
-"Bob Dylan must stop denying he was the voice of a generation. Bob, that's not something you go to determine. It's fate and y'all were information technology. If your generation could really choose a vocalisation, don't you think they'd accept picked one amend than yours?"
-"The big oil companies must end running ads telling us how much they're doing for the environment. Nosotros get it: You rape the earth, but yous cuddle afterwards. If you folks at Shell actually are serious most cleaning something up, start with your restrooms."

I read The New New Rules: A Funny Look At How Everybody But Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass before I read this book. Honestly, I'm glad considering this book, while funny, was non equally enjoyable as its followup. This book consists by and large of the shorter New Rules, like you lot find in the segment of the aforementioned name that airs toward the terminate of Real Time with Beak Maher. There are also essays in this i. Both the essays and the shorter jokes would have probably been more appealing had I read them shortly after the book came up. Since it's been viii years since the events that inspired the newest jokes in the book, those jokes weren't quite as funny. I'grand sure that they would have probably had me rolling over with laughter at the time, though.
Of course, the jokes are mainly most George W. Bush-league and his administration, but at that place are also jokes near people of more liberal leanings. And in that location are jokes that some might experience are inappropriate, but that might make them all-the-more necessary. Maher is unapologetic as he makes quips that virtually people wouldn't dare to make because he isn't afraid of making them. His advised sense of humour isn't for anybody, and then if you don't like the guy and/or is his style going in, then this book probably isn't for you.

It came out a few years ago and is therefore a bit dated, so a lot of the pop culture references are outdated (every bit is the contention that Democrats can't win elections). It came out a few years agone and is therefore a bit dated, so a lot of the pop culture references are outdated (every bit is the contention that Democrats can't win elections). But whereas recently, Bill has been a fighter for an honest kind of truth about our society and its issues, here he more complains and kvetches for 200 pages. He's besides a little high on the bitter/sexist/intolerant meter. I tin can sympathise bitterness after losing the presidential ballot in 2004, and I'd imagine it'd be worse if you lost your chore moderating "Politically Wrong" on ABC considering of a mild terrorism joke. But the remainder of it just came across every bit grating.
That would only bring information technology down to 4 stars for me, but then came the one-half-assed jokes with easy punchlines. I'm not certain, maybe this'd be truthful even with his electric current astonishing monologues (if you were to transcribe them), but he as well often went for the easy "have my married woman, please" kind of stupid joke more than often than I expected, given how smart his observations are.
But recommended for a flip-through, he'southward usually pretty spot-on on most of his observations. (Except, in my humble opinion, his view on monogamous, respectful behavior.)

Having said that, he frequently makes statements that I totally disagree with or even find rather offensive.
